The European Academy for Jewish Liturgy (EAJL)
EAJL - providing individuals and groups with dedicated coaching and mentoring in Jewish liturgy.
Many Jewish communities are emerging in Europe in places distant from large centres of Jewish learning. They are attracting people drawn to the Jewish tradition, but largely ignorant of it, resulting in a situation where there are those who want to be able to take an active part in the life of the community, but are unable to do so.
EAJL, founded by Chazan Jaclyn Chernett, aspires to reach out to these individuals and to bring them into an educational framework that will provide them with the knowledge base they need to draw them fully into the community – and in turn, to enable them to raise the standards of Jewish literacy of the community as a whole. The nature of our Academy being what it is, we are determined to do this through the medium of the Siddur and the richness of our liturgy – long recognized as expressing the most fundamental values and ethos of our tradition.
EAJL’s innovative and visionary programme matches individual students with appropriate expert teachers/mentors, enabling them to engage in and develop their own knowledge and lead their congregations in prayer. Today’s technology, such as Skype which costs little or nothing to use, enables aspiring students to study on a one-to-one basis with a good teacher/mentor in the ease of their own home, regardless of where they live. The programme is available to all who wish to learn. Chazan Jaclyn Chernett, together with the team of directors, works with the Cantors Assembly, the largest body of professional chazanim in the world, to ensure the best network of professional teachers.
The student of prayer is engaged in learning Jewish liturgical texts, the history of the liturgy, the spirit behind the texts including commentaries, the flow of each service. S/he is a sensitive person with a love of God and community and eager to enhance his/her Jewish identity and that of the community with which s/he is involved. S/he is hungry to learn the appropriate musical traditions of the Siddur and Machzor to pass on time-sanctified traditions. The curriculum used by the teacher/mentor is specific to the needs of the individual student.
EAJL also runs seminars for communities wherever required. Siddur/machzor texts according to the place and tradition of the community/communities involved are taught, with their appropriate nuscha’ot. Through these unique seminars students enhance their liturgical learning and Jewish prayer identity. These are a source of inspiration to individuals and groups inspiring them to continue their studies both through the one-to-one scheme and through further educational possibilities.
EAJL maintains a website which includes sample teaching and seminars.
EAJL is supported in its visionary work by Masorti Olami / World Council of Conservative Synagogues and the World Zionist Organization.
