Report from Adrian Kohan, Masorti Shaliach to Argentina

Many important events have taken place for our youth and young adults in the past few months. Here are a few highlights:

Darkei NOAM (Leadership Training Program for NOAM Counselors)

120 Darkei NOAM participants learned about Succot in an educational Shabbaton that took place in Buenos Aires on the Shabbat previous to the holiday. During the Shabbaton, the future NOAM madrichim (young counselors) studied and debated about the ideal Jewish educator, using Succot themes, halachot and traditions as a source of inspiration for the debate.

Chazon – A visionary quest

A year ago, 300 NOAM chanichim, ages 12-16, engaged in an educational journey in the footsteps of Herzl, the Zionist visionary. They learned about his life and work through a specially prepared living museum, educational booklets and CDs, and competed in a high-tech trivial contest based on the same technology as TV shows. The 24 winners, who not only excel because of their learning skills but also due to their leadership potential, finished their quest for a vision last month when they visited the Uruguayan chapter of Chazit Hanoar (another Conservative Movement sponsored youth movement), to spend Shabbat together with their Uruguayan peers and debate, study and learn about Conservative Judaism, education and commitment. The group, who will meet for the final journey of the trip – Shnat Hachshara, a one year leadership training course in Israel – bonded together to become the seed of the future Latin American Conservative young leadership. NOAM Chile
Adrian Kohan visited the Comunidad Israelita de Santiago, in Chile to spend Shabbat with the community and work with Bet El, the first Chilean NOAM Chapter. With more than 300 members, NOAM is the second largest youth movement in Chile and is widely recognized by the seriousness and quality of the educational program. NOAM’s centrality in Chile is the result of the brilliant work done by Rabbi Deby Grinberg, former Comunidad Israelita de Santiago’s Youth Department Director, and current NOAM Israel Rabbi.

Shnat Hachshara 2006 is on the way

NOAM madrichim from four communities in Buenos Aires enrolled for Shnat Hachshara 2006, a one year leadership training program in Israel. They will be the third consecutive NOAM group to travel to Israel for such a program and the largest group so far.

The madrichim will spend a year in Israel learning, studying and training to become the young Conservative Argentinean leadership. They will join 40 Chazit Hanoar madrichim to travel around the country, meet with Israeli society, study with the Jewish Agency's top academic staff, volunteer in Israel, and enjoy a full Conservative /Masorti experience when they spend two months in Ketura, a kibbutz associated with the Masorti Movement.

Chinuch Open Day

50 Marom members, who volunteer as NOAM madrichim, met in Marom’s Israel Lounge to debate central issues in Jewish education and learn about Chanukah and the use of traditional texts as educational resources. During the day, participants studied with Rabbi Dr. Adrian Herbst, Dean of the Seminario Rabinico Latinamericano Marshall T. Meyer, who offered a very interesting shiur (lesson) about Chanukah.  Participants then engaged in a talmudic writing exercise, where – simulating the dynamics of the talmudic text writing – they produced a multi-layered text which draws and analyses the ideal Jewish educator profile. Participants finished the day with a study session on the use of texts as educational resources, guided by Rabbi Mauricio Balter from Israel.
