Marom European Seminar
By Avigail Ben Aryeh, Director of Masorti Olami

50 Marom participants from across Europe, FSU and Israel enjoyed a weekend of Masorti learning and networking during the Masorti European Conference in Paris on November 2-4. The main topic of discussion was anti-Semitism. Important issues were discussed with the aim of furthering interfaith connections and education. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to learn from one another and meet leaders from across the world at the European Masorti conference.

We are grateful to the European Union for support of this seminar.

Blue, White and Green Seminar

By Noam Dolgin, Green Zionist Alliance

Thanks to the hard work and support of Marom Olami, MERCAZ USA and the Green Zionist Alliance (GZA), 42 young adults participated in the recent Shabbaton, “Blue, White, and Green: A Spiritual and Political Exploration of Israel’s Environment and our Connection to Land,”  Nov 16 – 19 outside of Baltimore, MD.

Coming from throughout the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada, with a varied background regarding Israel and the environment, participants were impressed by the caring, informative and inclusive space we created.  Finding new ways to think about, care about and work for the betterment of Israeli society, many were inspired to learn more and get involved with this Israel through this important work. In fact, more than 25% have now registered for trips in Israel or are interested in aliyah.

Guest Speakers included Gidon Bromberg, Friends of the Earth: Middle East, Joe Greenblott, US Environment Protection Agency, Devorah Braus, Bustan, and a panel of Israeli, Palestinian and North American alumni of the Arava Institute at Kibbutz Ketura.   Participants had the opportunity to learn about Israel’s environmental situation, explore local and global solutions to these problems and discuss what we can do to in our lives to help.

Special thanks to Rabbi Paul Arberman, Doron Rubin and Itamar Kremer who were an important team, connecting people to Masorti (Conservative) Judaism in Israel, and helping participants find programs and contacts for their next trip.

The Shabbaton reinforced, once again, that the Environment is a platform in which we can all come together as Jews in our people’s mission of Tikkun Olam.  It acted as a neutral platform in which we could all share our concern for Israel, regardless of our politics.
