Alan Silberman, President Alan H. Silberman became President of the World Council of Conservative / Masorti Synagogues on December 1, 2005, succeeding Rabbi Alan Silverstein of Congregtion Agudath Israel in Caldwell, New Jersey, who served as president over the past five years. Mr. Silberman, a practicing attorney, is a partner in Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, LLP, a law firm located in Chicago, Illinois and eight other U.S. cities, and is the Chair of the firm's national Antitrust, Marketing Practices, Franchising & Distribution practice. He has been involved in multiple aspects of Conservative Judaism since his early years, beginning as a student in Conservative synagogue schools. He began attending Camp Ramah in Wisconsin as a camper shortly after Ramah was created, and continued his involvement as a staff member, member of the camp's Board of Directors, President of Ramah Wisconsin, and in 1992 became the first Ramah camper to head the Ramah movement as President of the National Ramah Commission. He has been active in MERCAZ USA, participating as a delegate to the 33rd and 34th World Zionist Congresses and as a member of its Executive Committee. Previously, he served as a Vice President and Executive Committee member of the World Council of Conservative / Masorti Synagogues. A 1961 graduate of Northwestern University and a 1964 graduate of Yale Law School, he is well known throughout the world as a legal counselor and litigator in matters involving antitrust, franchising and distribution. He has served as Chair of the 10,000+-member Antitrust Section of the American Bar and is also a member of the Board of Lex Mundi, a worldwide association of more than 160 independent law firms, and chairs its Antitrust Competition and Trade practice group. He is married to Margaret Silberman, a child psychologist, who has also been active in the Ramah movement for many years, is Abba to Elena and her husband Eric, and to Mark, and Saba to Lauren and Andrew. The Silbermans are members of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. |
